What “cookies” are and what they are used for

A “cookie” is a text file that a website sends to the user / visitor device, where it is stored before being transmitted back during a subsequent visit.

Cookies may be distinguished:

  • on the basis of the person who installs them on the user’s device, depending on whether it is the same operator of the website that the user is visiting (so-called “first-party cookies”) or a different website, which install cookies through the first site (so-called “third-party cookies”);
  • on the basis of the purpose of each cookie. Some cookies allow the website to remember, for example, the preferences expressed by the user while browsing or to make a purchase or to authenticate (so-called “technical cookies”). Others cookie allow the website to monitor the user’s navigation also for the purpose of sending advertising or offering services in line with the preferences expressed by the user while surfing (so-called “profiling cookies”).

Only profiling cookies require the user’s prior consent. First-party technical cookies and third-party profiling cookies are installed on the website, as described in the table below.

Technical cookies

Technical cookies are used for the sole purpose of “carrying out the transmission of a communication through an electronic communications network, to the extent strictly necessary for the provider of an IT service upon explicit request made by the subscriber or the user”.

Technical cookies can be divided into:

  • Navigation or session cookies, which guarantee the standard navigation and use of the website (by allowing, for example, to make a purchase or log in to restricted areas);
  • Analytics cookies (such as Google Analytics), similar to technical cookies and used directly by the website manager to collect information, in aggregate form, on the number of users and how they visit the website;
  • Functionality cookies, which allow users to browse according to a series of selected criteria (for example the language) in order to improve the service provided. ***

In particular, the Google Analytics tool used on this website collects the IP address of visitors to provide an indication of their geographical location. This method is known as IP geo-location: Google Analytics does not report information related to the full and actual IP addresses of visitors but, due to the use of a method known as IP masking, only part of them.

The browser add-on for deactivating Google Analytics may be downloaded at this address https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout. The add-on specifies the Google Analytics JavaScript code (ga.js) to indicate that information about the website visit should not be sent to Google Analytics. The browser add-on to deactivate Google Analytics does not prevent the information from being sent to the website itself.

For the use of technical cookies, the consent of the interested party is not required.

Profiling cookies

Profiling cookies are designed to create user profiles and are used in order to send advertising messages in line with the preferences expressed by the user while surfing the net.

This website uses profiling cookies managed by third parties (there are no profiling cookies belonging to the owner).

Such cookies – listed below and for which the user’s consent is required – are used for advertising services, targeting for advertising purposes, personalization of content, tracking and performance optimization.
